Mobile phone recycling has become one of the fastest growing segments of the recycling world as well as a great way to raise money. Studies have shown that people are far more likely to recycle their phones if there is incentive to do so. This incentive can come in the form of cash for phones, vouchers for local vendors, or in some cases as charitable donations made in the person’s name. People like to feel as if there are getting something for their old phone and feeling good about themselves is definitely one incentive that has worked. A charitable fund that was started earlier this year has been able to use mobile phone recycling to raise more than five hundred thousand for a children’s hospital.
The Starship Foundation launched its Mobile Phone Appeal scheme early in 2009 and thus far they have been able to raise more than five hundred thousand dollars for the Starship Children’s Hospital in New Zealand. The donated phones are sent to places all over the world where they can be recycled or in some cases reused. The money gained goes to help support the hospital in the form of priority needs like live saving equipment vital for the treatment of children. Starship started the program as a way to allow people to donate without having to give cash.
The side benefit is that the scheme is keeping thousands of phones out of landfills where they can leak harmful chemicals into the soil that end up contaminating drinking water.
