Disability charity Scope has teamed up with recycling company Redeem to raise money by breaking a Guinness World Record - and it wants Watford residents to help.
The charity hopes to beat the standing record of 952 phones recycled in one week.
Sarah Walker, area manager for Scope, said: "We are calling on people to dig out their old phones - and help us ring in the changes for Scope’s work with disabled people. Don’t put recycling on hold and dump your phone, donate it to Scope instead. Every phone counts and will bring us a step closer to achieving a new world record breaker.”
It is estimated that more than 1.5million old handsets are currently lying unused around houses in Hertfordshire alone.
This number will increase with people receiving new handsets this Christmas and Scope believes it is a perfect time to donate those old phones.
Jamie Rae, Redeem Plc chief executive, said: “We want as many people to take part and help us break a world record so we can raise lots of money for Scope. With approximately four million people predicted to have upgraded phones this year, this is a great way to dispose of your old ones!”
To help support Scope, and break a world record, visit Scope in The Parade, High Street, Watford between January 8-15 and hand your old mobile phone to a member of staff.
