Over 325 million mobile phones were sold during the fourth quarter of last year, representing double digit growth from the same period in Q4 2008 when over 292 million were shipped.
The improving conditions in the sector have raised hopes that the mobile market is finally on its way towards recovery after over a year of consecutive slumps in phone sales.
The total sales figure for 2009 was put at 1.13 billion, which is still down by over five per cent from the previous year.
Analyst Kevin Restivo said: "The Asia/Pacific region and the United States were primarily responsible for pushing the market back into growth territory."
