Overlook on Google Nexus S

An efficient headset that’s guaranteed to get the latest Android updates, but the price is on the high side. This is generally a good thing: the 4in 480 x 800 screen uses Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology, which means it’s eyeball-searing in its gleam and amazingly colorful, and the touchscreen itself is responsive and exact.

With a 1GHz processor under the hood, too, the Nexus S feels very approachable. The biggest advantage to any Google phone is that owners are always ahead of the curve when it comes to operating system updates, and that hasn’t changed with Nexus S. It’s the only smartphone on the market right now to sport Android 2.3 and when the next version rolls along owners won’t have to wait on their network.

You’ll still not get very impressive battery life out of this phone. In our 24-hour test, in which we download 50MB of data, make a 30-minute phone call, force the screen on for an hour, listen to music for an hour and finally leave the phone in its default email checking state for the remaining time, we recorded 50% capacity on the gauge.

Conclusion

Despite this, it’s light, speedy, has a lovely screen, and Google’s backing ensure you’ll always be ahead of the curve when it comes to Android OS updates, even if this one is a little underwhelming.

It’s pricey & both SIM-free (£430) and on contract – but there’s a sudden price drop and a nicer screen means there’s sufficient appeal for early adopters to consider it over the Nexus One.

Samsung Omnia 7 – An excellent device

Samsung announced just one Windows Phone 7 handset when the operating system launched last month. The Omnia 7 GT-i8700 is available from Three, Orange and T-Mobile, and is also available SIM free. The Omnia 7 is a nicely made smartphone, although there’s nothing particularly spectacular about the chassis design. However, anyone who appreciates clean lines and solid hardware should find that the Omnia 7 ticking these boxes.

The handset is relatively thin (10.99mm) given its 64.2mm-by-122.4mm footprint. It weighs 138g, which is neither lightweight nor excessively heavy. The screen bezel is plastic at the top and bottom, and is complemented by a metal back – with a removable panel cut into it -that curves to form the left and right edges. The resolution is the standard 480 by 800 pixels, but rather than LCD, the Omnia 7 uses superior Super AMOLED technology. The display is sharp, vibrant and a joy to look at – particularly in indoor conditions, where it delivers extremely vivid colors. Continue Reading »

Sony Ericsson Cedar review

Verdict
The Cedar is yet another likeable addition to Sony Ericsson’s eco-friendly GreenHeart range, offering impressive functionality and attractive aesthetics for an eminently reasonable price. It’s just a shame that irksome Web access and occasional social-networking issues spoil the overall impression.

The Sony Ericsson Cedar forms part of the company’s environmentally conscious GreenHeart range. Constructed from and packaged in predominantly recycled materials, the Cedar is the perfect handset for mobile users with lofty morals. Continue Reading »
